Questions about Maine Coon diet 4. Why do you feed raw to your adult cats and not the kittens?
In general, cats love their raw food diet. If we feed kittens the raw food and their new owner feeds hard kibble, it might be very difficult to switch them over to the kibble. It is much easier to switch from hard kibble to raw food.
5. Why do you choose to feed raw over kibble?
Raw food is not cooked and the nutrients in the diet is much more healthy. There are no fillers and it is a very healthy diet. It is like comparing a balanced home cooked meal to a quick meal from McDonald's for us. It is okay but not so healthy if fed all the time. Commercial kibble, no matter what quality, has additives, fillers, and preservatives where as a raw diet does not.
6. Is it okay to feed both raw and kibble?
This question can be answered different depending on who is answering it. In my opinion, feeding any raw is good compared to no raw. I don't see a problem by feeding both. Some people do this because of the pricey raw food and it is not always affordable. I have seen others do this because they are not sure their raw food meets the daily nutritional needs. Whatever the reason is, the animals always seem to love the raw food! It is rare that an animal does not like raw but I have witnessed it. In my case, they only ate a little raw and I had to leave hard kibble out as well since they preferred it. To this day I have not seen any problems with feeding both kibble and raw at the same time.
7. What hard food do you recommend feeding a Maine Coon cat/kitten?
Each cat is different and some have sensitive tummies. I have fed RawBoost Instinct and I now feed 4Health, all life stages cat food. The jury is still out as I currently researching, testing, and trying several different brands of kibbles to determine what works best for my clan.
8. How do you make raw food for a Maine Coon cat/kitten?
I mix about 88% meat and 10% ground raw meaty bone, 1% fruit (usually blueberries and cranberries), 1% seeds (sunflower, sometimes small amounts of fennel, wheat germ, flaxseed & soaked oats). In this mixture, I add Spirulina (a seaweed that acts as an immune booster amongst other great things). Once my mixture is mixed well, I package it for the freezer, taking out only what I need for the next day on a daily basis. In my daily feeding portions, I add Four Leaf Rover Safe-Sea (Omega-3) by the dropper according to each animals needs and a teaspoon of yogurt for their pre and probiotic each day. I do not follow perfectlyrawsome.com completely but I do use their site as a guide when making my cat food batches monthly. I raise meat rabbits that are a big portion of my meat and bone but rabbit meat is lean so I also use chicken, beef, turkey and pork among other meats that I purchase each month. Sometimes we use venison and lamb as well.
9. What are the best treats for an adult Maine Coon cat?
My opinion is 100% meat is the safest and best treat for a cat. It is very easy to dehydrate meat and chop up in bite size portions.
10. What are the best treats for a Maine Coon kitten?
The best treats for a kitten are the same as an adult cat. Safe, healthy, and yummy treats are always going to be 100% pure meat that you can dehydrate in your oven.
11. Do I need to feed bottled water to my cat?
If you have city water or well water, as long as it is safe and not contaminated, you should not have to buy bottled water for your cat. If your water is safe for you to drink, it is safe for your cat.
12. What is the best water dish for a Maine Coon cat who plays with the water?
My vet has told me to use ceramic dishes for water dishes for my cats. However, it is not always easy to to elevate these. You may have to place your water dish up high so your cat does not play in it as he/she drinks from it. I have dishes that attach to the side of our catio and they cannot knock them off. Placing the dishes at eye level keeps them from dipping their paws into the water and that is definitely one of their favorite things to do! I also have elevated dishes that sit on the ground with a stand that are eye level and those are great as well. Others state that they place their water dish in the shower or bath tub. Maine Coons love to make water messes!
13. What are the best cat dishes?
Some cats can have gum disease and it is recommended to not use metal dishes. I do not know of any proof that ceramic dishes help but my vet did tell me this once. Sometimes elevating drinking dishes will help avoid water messes! I do like my food dishes elevated as well so they are not bending down to eat or drink.
14. How often do I feed my Maine Coon kitten?
We free feed our Maine Coon kittens here. It is very convenient to keep hard kibble out at all times. If we happen to be feeding a raw diet, we only allow it to sit out for fifteen minutes or until they lose interest in the food. Kittens should be fed three to four times a day if you do not free feed.
15. How many times a day do I feed my cat?
Kittens need three to four meals a day if you do not keep food out available all the time. Adult cats should be fed twice a day.
16. Is it okay to leave my cat food out all day?
If you feed dry kibble, there is no problem in leaving it out all of the time. If it gets soiled, you should discard and give a fresh meal.

You have five days to get them to your vet to confirm this as they can catch contagious viruses/diseases outside of our home that is out of our control. All of our cats are DNA genetic health tested and go through annual - biannual echocardiograms to ensure they are heart healthy.
30. If purchasing two kittens, what genders are best to keep together?
Unless you are a breeder, we recommend that you pick your two favorite kittens and schedule them to be altered (spayed/neutered) as soon as your vet requires it. You will not have any issues with them getting along but you will need to be careful if you purchase one of each gender due to how young females can breed.
Questions about Health and Grooming 31. How big do your Maine Coons get?
Maine Coon cats are a slow growing breed that often do not stop growing until five years of age. They can grow up to thirty pounds sometimes. However, that is not as common as most may think. Females tend to be 10 - 15 pounds grown and males are usually 18 - 25 pounds when fully mature. It is not a shock for them to go over these sizes but we do not like to get someones expetation built up to think they are bigger than that. They look much bigger than they weigh! They are are a long haired cat breed. They have very fluffy tails and extremely long bodies with a lengthy mane. All of these features together make them look massive!
32. Are Maine Coons healthy for the most part?
Hopefully you are buying a kitten from us and you do not have to worry about the unhealthy genetics passing down from a unhealthy line of cats. If you buy from an ethical Maine Coon breeder who does all the preliminary tests to ensure healthy offspring and you follow up with keeping your kitten cared for and fed properly, these cats can live well into their twenties or even thirty years!
33. What special testing do you do on your Maine Coon cats to ensure healthy hearts and good genetics?
We use Wisdom Panel, Optimal Selection for all of our DNA testing. Echocardiograms are done by a licensed veterinarian cardiology specialist on our adult Maine Coon cats every 18 months or so.
34. How much grooming is require for a Maine Coon cat?
Maine Coons are a long haired cat breed so they do need brushed. Sometimes it is easy to forget to brush your cat but a good weekly brushing is minimally needed and the more often you brush, the less cat hair you find stuck to your furniture and clothing. You will need to trim your cats toenails every couple of weeks or as needed as well. If you can swing it, brush your cats teeth as well! I know this is not something anyone wants to do but keeping their gums healthy is important. Not many people bathe their cat but I do. My cats get a good scrubbing in a sudsy bath every couple of months or so and blow dried with a force air dryer. Cats can get oily sheen to their hair and this eliminates it and keeps them looking and feeling gorgeous. Be careful not to let any water in the ears. I use a produce called XXXXXXXXXXX that I put in their ears after every bath so they do not get a yeast infection from any possible water that could have entered the ear canal. Ear infections are no fun to deal with in cats!
35. How often does a Maine Coon cat need a bath?
How often you bathe your cat really depends on your reason. Some say a cat needs a bath every six weeks but cats generally keep themselves pretty clean. This is a case by case decision as some cats are much cleaner than others with nicer coats and just don't smell as much as others. I bathe my cats about every two months, give or take a. month if needed.
Questions about Maine Coon characteristics and personality 36. What is a Maine Coon cats personality like?
Maine Coon cats have such amazing personalities and are more dog-like than they are cat-like. Cats are typically independent but a Maine Coon loves human attention and interaction. They are more up in your face friendly than a regular domestic cat typically is. They love to give hugs, can learn tricks like fetching, and snuggle just like a lap dog! If you spay or neuter your cat, either gender make wonderful pets. Even if your cat is not altered, they can make amazing pets. However, an unaltered female cat can be hormonal and have a moody personality as well as stir up trouble while in heat. Male cats that are unaltered can become hormonal and mark. Do not think for one minute that females won't mark because they can as well, especially when in heat. I highly encourage you to spay and neuter if you are not planning on breeding your cat for optimal and awesome personalities at all times.
